Name: Julieth Sargent

 

I am a student at the University of Florida and was part of the class, Writing Through Media, which surrounds the topic of disability studies. It really sparked my interest when we talked about accessibility because it opened my mind to an issue that I was not fully aware of before. In particular, a podcast I listened to by Alice Wong, about food accessibility brought perspective to this issue that many do not realize. There are an abundance of everyday object made to assist individuals with disabilities. I found this fascinating because I realized how oblivious I was to the world around me in regards to disability and I am probably not the only one.

 

The more I looked at both the available and unavailable resources for a variety of disabilities, I particularly became interested in technological resources. The website that caused this spark of interest in accessibility through digital devices, was about apps that can find available routes for wheelchair users written by Munawar Gul. As an able-bodied individual I can not directly speak for the disability community however, I felt that by spreading the word about the apps on wheelchairs routes as done by Gul, it is extremely beneficial to those who may discover the website. I was in turn inspired by this and hope to potentially introduce a new app or concept to think about to whoever may view this website.

In regard to cellular devices, I noticed there was limited availability of apps that were provided on a wide spread amount of cellphone brands. This makes it difficult for these resources to be used by individuals who may not have these name brand phones available to them or simply may just prefer another phone brand. For this website, I tried to add apps that were available on more than one phone brands in order to try and inform individuals on apps that had more of a chance on being available and useful for visually impaired individuals. Furthermore, since there is a range of visual disabilities I tried to include apps that could be used across the spectrum.
